Section 2: Trained Tasks to Assist with Disability-Related Needs
| Task | Description | How This Task Assists with Disability-Related Need |
|---|---|---|
| Deep Pressure Therapy | Dog applies controlled body weight/pressure to handler’s lap, chest, or legs upon command or when detecting distress signals | Provides tactile grounding that interrupts anxiety/panic cycles, reduces heart rate, and promotes parasympathetic nervous system activation |
| Grounding | Dog makes deliberate physical contact (nose nudge, paw touch, leaning) to redirect handler’s focus | Interrupts dissociative episodes, depersonalization, or anxiety spirals by providing a sensory anchor to the present moment |
| Guide to Safe Location | Dog leads handler to pre-identified safe location, exit, or quiet area when detecting distress or upon command | Enables handler to remove themselves from overwhelming environments during episodes when cognitive function may be impaired |
| Tactile Stimulation/Interruption | Dog provides licking, pawing, or nudging behaviors to interrupt repetitive behaviors or thought patterns | Breaks cycles of harmful repetitive behaviors, panic spiraling, or disengagement states |
| Interpersonal Interaction | Dog creates social buffer and facilitates appropriate interaction with others on command | Reduces social anxiety and feelings of isolation; provides conversation bridge during social withdrawal episodes |
