Why Training Methodology Is a Standards Issue
Force-free training is not a philosophy preference at the Assistance Dog Institute of Canada. It is a compliance requirement. If you are working toward CADI certification or submitting graduates for partner placement, the methodology you use during every stage of training is evaluated, not just the finished behaviour.
This matters because assistance dogs are not pet companions. They are medical equipment in a living body. The reliability and emotional stability of a trained assistance dog directly affects the safety and wellbeing of a person with a disability. That context changes everything about how we evaluate training decisions.
This post breaks down the evidence base, the ADI standards framework, and the specific reasons CADI prohibits aversive equipment and punishment-based techniques across all member programs.
The ADI Framework for Humane Training
Assistance Dogs International sets the global baseline for member accreditation. Their standards explicitly require that member programs use humane training methods and prohibit the use of physical corrections, choke chains, prong collars, electronic stimulation devices, and any technique that relies on pain, fear or intimidation to suppress or modify behaviour.
CADI operates as a Canadian standards body aligned with ADI accreditation criteria. When CADI evaluates a training program, reviewers look at documented training protocols, session logs, video submissions, and equipment inventories. Prong collars in your training facility inventory, even unused, create a compliance flag. The standard is that clear.
ADI's position is grounded in decades of research into applied behaviour analysis and animal learning theory. The convergence of that research has moved the international assistance dog community firmly toward what is now termed least intrusive, minimally aversive (LIMA) methodology, with force-free positive reinforcement as the documented best practice for assistance dog training specifically.

The Science Behind Positive Reinforcement
Positive reinforcement works by adding something the learner values immediately following a target behaviour, increasing the probability that the behaviour will occur again under similar conditions. For working dogs, this is primarily food, though toy and social reinforcers are used strategically depending on the individual dog's motivation profile.
What makes positive reinforcement particularly well-suited to assistance dog work is that it builds behaviour chains with the dog as an active, motivated participant rather than a compliant one. Dogs trained under consistent positive reinforcement schedules show higher rates of behaviour generalisation across novel environments. That matters enormously for a service dog who needs to perform reliably in airports, hospitals, classrooms, and crowded urban spaces the trainer has never visited.
Research in companion animal behaviour science consistently shows that positive reinforcement produces faster initial learning, stronger stimulus control, and lower rates of avoidance and aggression than punishment-based alternatives. The LIMA framework, documented extensively in applied behaviour analysis literature and adopted by organisations including the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, places positive reinforcement as the first and preferred intervention tier before any other approach is considered.
For trainers preparing submissions through CADI's certification pathway, understanding the theoretical underpinning of positive reinforcement is not optional background knowledge. It is assessed directly in the written component of CADI credentialing.
Why Aversive Tools Are Prohibited
The prohibition on aversive tools under CADI and ADI standards is not simply an ethical stance. It is based on documented effects of aversive stimulation on working dog reliability and on the human-dog team relationship.
Aversive tools function by applying an unpleasant stimulus to suppress behaviour. Choke chains, prong collars, and electronic stimulation devices all operate on positive punishment or negative reinforcement quadrants of operant conditioning. The learner acts to avoid or escape the aversive, rather than to earn a reward. This distinction is not trivial. It changes the emotional valence of the training context and the dog's relationship to the task itself.
When a dog is trained primarily through avoidance, the task becomes associated with the risk of discomfort. Under stress, dogs trained with aversive methods show higher rates of learned helplessness, shutdown, and displacement behaviours. In a service dog, shutdown is not a training failure. It is a safety failure. A dog that stops responding because the environment has become aversive is a dog that may fail to alert to a medical event, guide through a hazard, or interrupt a psychiatric crisis.
CADI's prohibition extends to indirect aversive use as well. Training methods that use flooding, extended physical restraint as a calming technique, or alpha roll submissions are not compliant with CADI methodology regardless of whether a physical tool is involved. The standard is behaviour-based, not equipment-based alone.
How Stress Physiology Undermines Task Reliability
Working trainers need to understand canine stress physiology at a practical level. When a dog experiences a perceived threat, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activates and cortisol rises. In the short term, this sharpens certain survival responses. In the long term, chronic elevation of cortisol impairs learning consolidation, degrades memory retrieval, and reduces the dog's capacity to perform complex behaviour chains under novel conditions.
Aversive training methods, even when applied inconsistently or at low intensity, create anticipatory stress in the dog during training sessions. The dog learns to scan for the aversive rather than engaging optimally with the task. Over time, this anticipatory state becomes baseline during work, and the dog's operational ceiling drops. Trainers often misread this as the dog reaching its individual capacity limit. The literature suggests it is frequently a training environment effect rather than a dog-specific ceiling.
Conversely, dogs trained under consistent positive reinforcement protocols show lower baseline cortisol in working contexts, higher engagement rates, and stronger performance under distraction. These are not anecdotal observations. They are documented outcomes across multiple independent studies in working dog research. CADI training standards are explicitly designed around this evidence base.

CADI Methodology in Practice
Understanding the standard is one thing. Implementing it across a working program is another. Here is what CADI-compliant methodology looks like on the ground.
Task acquisition begins with shaping or luring using high-value food reinforcement on a continuous reinforcement schedule. Once a behaviour is established at above 80 percent reliability in low-distraction environments, the program moves to variable ratio reinforcement to build durability. This is not guesswork. It is a documented schedule based on the individual dog's reinforcement history log, which CADI reviewers will request during accreditation visits.
Undesired behaviours are addressed through antecedent management, extinction, differential reinforcement of incompatible behaviours, or functional behaviour assessment to identify and modify the maintaining variables. CADI methodology does not rely on suppressing behaviour with punishment when the environment or training protocol can be adjusted first.
Equipment in a CADI-compliant program includes flat collars, front-clip harnesses, head halters fitted and conditioned correctly, and long lines for distance work. Head halters require careful conditioning and are used for management, not correction. If a dog needs a management tool, that is a signal to address the underlying behaviour through training, not to lean on the tool as a substitute for skill development.
Session documentation is not optional. CADI expects trainers to maintain structured logs that include antecedent conditions, target behaviour, consequence delivered, and response rate per session. This data is the evidence base for your program's training decisions and the primary material reviewers use to evaluate methodology compliance.
Addressing Common Pushback From Trainers
Trainers coming from sport dog or protection sport backgrounds sometimes arrive at assistance dog training with well-established skills that include correction-based techniques. The pushback usually sounds like one of three things.
The first is efficiency. Trainers argue that a well-timed correction stops a behaviour faster than extinction or differential reinforcement. This is partly true in the short term. It is not true at the level of long-term behaviour durability or generalisation in working contexts. Speed of initial suppression is not the relevant metric for an assistance dog program. Reliability across years of public access work is the metric.
The second is the fallacy of the balanced approach. Some trainers argue that using positive reinforcement for most training while reserving corrections for specific situations represents a reasonable middle ground. Under CADI standards, this is not compliant. The issue is not frequency of aversive use. It is the effect of even occasional aversive use on the dog's emotional state during work and its relationship to the handler.
The third is handler-specific requests. Occasionally a client or family member will request firmer handling because they are accustomed to it or because they have read outdated material. CADI-certified trainers are trained to address this directly and educate clients on why the methodology is non-negotiable, not a preference. What This Means for Your Certification Pathway
If you are working toward CADI certification or preparing a program for ADI accreditation review, methodology compliance is evaluated before and after any placement is approved. A brilliant public access performance from a dog trained with aversive methods does not override methodology non-compliance. The two are assessed separately.
CADI's review process includes video submission of training sessions at multiple stages of a dog's program. Reviewers are trained to identify equipment, handler body language, dog stress signals, and reinforcement delivery patterns. Submitting sessions that clearly document positive reinforcement protocols, appropriate shaping progressions, and antecedent management strategies is the clearest path through review.
